The Neighborhood American Gay Neighborhoods The Gay Neighborhood. First popularized in the sixties with San Francisco's Castro District and New York's Greenwich Village. Since then, young gays have taken root in a certain neighborhood or neighborhoods in just about every city of size, in the process turning what were once aging, dying neighborhoods into growing centers of activity. There's Seattle's vibrant Capitol Hill and Atlanta's gay mecca Midtown; Baltimore's artsy Mount Vernon and Saint Louis's upscale Central West End. Then, there's also little Huntsville, Alabama's quaint and historic Five Points area. Though all are distinct, they also seem to have many commonalities. Mainly, they seem to be older neighborhoods, are pedestrian friendly, and have a retail core. Here, you can get the gay pulse of any city.
