The Neighborhood The Highlands The Highlands, just south of downtown, is one of Birmingham's more distinct, northeastern- like areas. It is no surprise that a good portion of gays and lesbians in Alabama's largest city make their home here. The neighborhood is marked by it's classic architecture, many parks, and selection of coffee houses and alternative shops on the tree lined, winding Highland Avenue.
