The Old Bryce Hospital
Old Bryce
Hospital
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
There are two "Old Bryce Hospital" facilities. One is in Northport next to the Tuscaloosa airport. This facility is truly abandoned and access is extremely difficult. The other one is in Tuscaloosa, adjacent to the University of Alabama campus. That facility is what is seen here.

The Tuscaloosa building is located on Bryce's present day campus. The central area of the building is still in use as administrative offices, but the long east and west wings have been vacated.

The fine building standing today was completed in 1861 as the Alabama Insane Hospital. Unique for its time, it was built with a linear plan.

The white washed building stands in stark contrast to the manicured lawns and modern structures surrounding it.

One can almost see the patients watching the world go by outside of their windows. Next to the building but in the process of being demolished at the time these photos were taken was the Psychopath Building.

The name of the building alone invokes chills. But the look of it is something else.

The Psychopath Building is now gone, a victim of the expansion of the University of Alabama. But, with recent renovations, the main building will remain for years to come.
