Tucked away in the mountains of southern middle Tennesee lies one of the nation's finest
colleges.
Located on top of Monteagle Mountain, the campus is said to be one of the nation's loveliest.
But the campus is famous for more than its scenery or academics. Strange legends persist
among the stone walls.
One of the most famous and strangest of legends is that of the Headless Gownsman. He is seen
among the trees dressed in a robe of the prestigious Order of Gownsman. His ghostly image is
seen all over campus, but is most often seen at Saint Luke's Hall.
There are two stories of his origin. One says that he tragically died in a car accident
while driving the treacherous and winding roads up Monteagle.
The second story is much stranger and more unbelievable. Some say the headless gownsman is
the spirit of a student who loved to learn. He was obsessed with studying. Eventually, his
head was so full of knowledge, it just exploded.
As unbelievable as the story may be, it is the most well known legend of the University of
the South.
Another legend persists in Tuckaway Hall. It is said that on the same third level room,
three students have committed suicide.
Now it is said that their spirits haunt the building, especially harrassing anyone unlucky
enough to be assigned the unlucky room.
