Huntsville,
Alabama
A century before Huntsville became known for it’s aerospace industry, cotton mills dominated
the city’s economy. The two biggest mills, Dallas and Lincoln, were separated only by the
single set of railroad tracks running between them.
Today, the Lincoln Mill still stands. It was recently converted into office space. Friends
who have worked there tell of mysterious noises and corridors running through the building.
But, tragically, the over one million square foot Dallas Mill burned to the ground in 1992,
leaving its rusting water tower as the only reminder of its existence.
But the empty ground has been anything but quiet. They say that just after the mill had
opened, a worker was cleaning one of the enormous smoke stacks. He slipped and fell to his
death. He haunted the building until its demise.
In its final days, the structure became a refuge for bored teenagers and homeless people.
Some say that a few of the derelicts perished in the quickly burning fire, whose flames shot
hundreds of feet into the air. They say their wandering spirits can be seen still walking
the grounds.
The building was beautiful and, if still standing today, would surely have the beauty and the
legends to rival even those of places like the Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham. But, it is gone
forever.
