The cobblestone paths of the University of Montevallo transport you to a place full of
mystery and legends.
Main Hall is the home of Alabama's most famous ghost, Condie Cunningham, whose dress caught
fire while she was making fudge in her room. Her agonizing screams are still heard in the
building's cavernous hallways.
The most enduring part of her legend is the face in the door. In a locked room at the top of
Main Hall, a wooden door is kept. The grains seem to show a face in agony. They say this is
her door.
South Main is the oldest part of the building and is said to be where Condie died. But it is
also said that on moonlit nights, ghostly figures can be seen dancing on Main's rooftop.
The Main Quad is said to be home to a woman who can be seen on moonlit nights crying over a
lost love.
Reynolds Hall, the oldest building on campus, once served as a Civil War hospital. Captain
Reynolds is said to haunt this building, carrying his head in his arms after leaving the
building at the mercy of Union soldiers, who massacred the building's occupants while the
captain was away.
On some nights, a figure can be seen walking into the tower, the same path a student took
years ago before comitting suicide at the top.
Old Man King is said to have buried some gold coins on the grounds of his old residence to
keep them from Union soldiers. He has been seen still watching over them. Even in death.
Hanson Hall is said to be haunted by an old housemother who seems never to have abandoned her
nightly watch over its residents, years after her life had ended. She has opened doors, been
vocal at times and sometimes can be heard just walking up and down the hallways.
Dr. Trumbaur, one of the designers of Palmer Hall, is said to roam this building because his
name was left off of the corner- stone. Today, just before Montevallo's College Night, a
banter is said to swing at the hands of Dr. Trumbaur. When it stops, whichever side gets the
last swing is said to win the competition.
The absolutely beautiful campus is located in the geographic center of Alabama. Many say
this accounts for the large amount of strange events occuring here.
