An imposing structure in and of itself, the Minneapolis City Hall is said to be haunted by
the last man to be hanged in Minnesota.
The year was 1898. The man was John Moshik. The fifth floor was where he spent his final
days in solitude waiting for his death.
Many claim to feel cold winds, feel a ghostly presence and see strange shadows on the fifth
floor at night.
In fact, in the 1950s when the fifth floor was remodeled, the center of activity, the chapel
courtroom, was eliminated altogether.
In the late 1970s, a detention center was built on the building's south side. There is a
locked door in this facility. A door that leads to the south clock tower attic.
Detainees have complained of seeing a man in boxer shorts staring at them from behind a
window in the common area in the middle of the night.
People who have been associatd with the center for years say that beyond the locked door and
up an old wrought iron spiral staircase is the forgotten death row. This, they say, is where
Moshik was executed.
