Madison County High School was established in 1908 as the first public high school in Madison
County.
The original building burned, while the present brick tudor-styled building was completed in
1936.
Countless students have walked these halls since the cornerstone was laid. Many seem never
to have left.
I spent one summer working at the school, often walking the creaky hallways alone. Or so I
thought.
I never felt quite alone in the old building. Footsteps could be heard down the hallway
while no one was there.
The empty auditorium could be a frightening place. It was as if an unseen audience was
watching your every move.
I wasn't alone in feeling these things. Other workers there spoke of voices and shadows in
the night, long after the final bell had rung.
