House

In 1889, this former farm house was purchased by philanthropist Jane Addams, who hoped to
turn the building into a social settlement to assist those living in the slums that had
developed around it.
The wife of the original owner seemed never to have left. It is reported that Jane Addams
herself saw the woman's apparition on the upper level.
Another occupant, believing that a spirit could not cross over water, would place a bucket
of water on the grand staircase in hopes of keeping the ghost confined to the upper level.
The spirit is seen, at worst, as a nuisance and, at best, a protector of the house and its
occupants. But there are darker secrets whispered through the many houses surrounding the
Jane Addams-Hull House.
There was a story about a young immigrant girl who gave birth to the devil himself. They say
the child, with its pointed ears and scaly skin, was abandoned and was only able to find
safety within the Hull House. Ms. Addams denied the stories, and eventually the reports of
the baby faded into local lore.
Today, in whispers, people still speak of the devil baby of Hull House. Some even say that
a strange looking child can be seen peering from the upper windows.
