Founded in 1822, Athens Female Academy, as it was known as the time, was Alabama's first
institution of higher learning.
Another distinction is its hauntings. The ghost of Founders Hall's attic leaves the air
frigid when it should be rather warm.
The library was once located in Founders Hall, and many a quiet study session has been
interrupted by mysterious voices, footsteps, and scratchings.
This old building was said to be haunted by a young music student who died tragically on a
night when her talents were to be showcased.
Many details to this story were unfounded, and the story was discounted. But, even today,
visitors to the building swear to the existance of a spirit among them.
The outside courtyard, beautifully landscaped in brick and flora, has a darker side. Even
