Unfortunately, the gay community of Huntsville experienced its zenith during the
mid-nineties. Gone was the pride festival at an intimate park downtown. It had been moved
to the comfortable yet confined grounds of the local Metropolitan Community Church. I had
heard that they moved it to "private property" because some people were reluctant to be seen
at the park. Well, this may sound harsh and I know that we all have our reasons for our own
"out" status, but if you're too afraid to be seen on public grounds with other people like
you for some kind of fear, what kind of pride do you have in the first place? In a sense,
our pride festival had moved back into the closet.
